| hi everybody, i am in yale college in wrexham at the moment studying BTEC iT, and we have to move onto another unit next week, and its all about networking, so while we were in a lesson, the teacher we will be having came to introduce himself, and he mentioned that we would need a USB stick thingy as there was no network in there for us to get at our work, so i was wondering how on earth the computers have the internet if there is 'no network' in there, i cant see them wiring them all to the main connection! ermmm if you have any idea what hes on about then please let me know mike x|X|x |

| You can have just an Internet network using a router and hubs,

| Mike, As others have asked before please don't use text speak. I for one often don't bother to answer a thread that someone has written in text speak. It is in the rules. The computers are networked together if they have access to the internet. I expect what your teacher was telling you was that the computers you will be using are not part of the same domain as the others. This means that you will not be able to access your normal documents that are stored on your file space. I expect that trying to get your stuff any other way will constitute hacking which is a big no no in a school environment. Just use the USB stick like everyone else!

| The reason you can't access your college's main network is that you are in a "Dirty Network" room... This means that there is a network in the room, it's jus t not attached to the main college network, so that your networking exploits are highly unlikely to damage the network infrastructure. This is a safety feature, and you'll find it in most educational institutions. It's an isolated environment that allows a lot more freedom than you'll find under the normal college environment, and commonly you'll be using virtual computers (Am I right?) I'd personally advise against going through the main domain, it's easy for the college administration to trace back to the computer. It's actually illegal for you to access information through that route without permission. Incidentally, your college trashed us (Llandrillo) at basketball last year. I was on the team. ~shamefaced~ |

| I don't play b-ball any more. I'm on Foundation Degree in Computing, it's run by NEWI, but taught in Llandrillo as well... It's good fun =) A lot of people on this course came from the BND too. Think I'll take multimedia route next year, there's very little change in programming learning. What career are you planning to go into? |
