If you are using Windows XP, go to the network set up wizard and it will create the network for you, naturally you will need a patch cable to connect them.

If you have a Router, it's a patch cable, if not it's a croosover cable that you need to connect to two together.

If you have a modem that is connected to your computer at the moment by a ethernet cable then you will have to disconnect from the internet to share files across the computers. This is because your computer probably only has 1 ethernet (network) port.

If this doesn't matter then all you will need is to buy a crossover cable. This is a special sort of network cable, and although it looks like a normal cable, it is wired differently. I will not go into why it is wired differently, but it is needed for the type of connection you want to make.

So you will need to buy a Cat5 crossover cable. You could get one from a computer store (PC World have them) or you could buy one online. A short one will be about a fiver.

You cannot use the cable that you have connected to your modem at the moment because this will not be a crossover cable.

Once you have this you can plug one end in to the laptop and one end in to the desktop. Then come back here and we can tell you how to make the computers see each other.

Hope this helps.

Default Conect my laptop to main computer using LAN

Hi i've recently joined and have exactly the same setup without problems.

I have two computers connected by a Crossover Cat5 patch cable with static IP addresses as for some reason DHCP which assigns the addresses dynamically doesn't work on one the main PC.

The main PC has a Static address of 192.168.1.1 and no default gateway

Other PC has static address of 192.168.1.2 with the efault gateway of 192.168.1

Good luck
