Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone help i am running windows vista premium on my desktop and windows xp professional on my laptop i purchased a male to male usb connection cable but when i plug them together nothing is recognized are there any threads that can point me to an answer to this problem?.

any help greatly appreciated.

i just want to transfer files from one to the other and thought i could run antivirus from my desktop to check for viruses on the laptop

Get a crossover ethernet cable if your laptop has an ethernet port.

Otherwise, use a wireless router to share files over a network.

if i explain something you may be able to help? i used to get my internet through my set top box ntl now virgin media they fitted a modem so i may be able to plug the cable from the modem into the laptop but will i need to change settings as it's now coming through a modem?

You will need to install the drivers (typically from the modem's CD) onto your laptop, then connect it.

Or, you can buy a wireless router for your desktop, and plug the cable modem into that. That way, you can use the internet without any cabling with your laptop, and you can also set it up where you can read and write to your desktop's hard disk (like I detailed before).
