I have recently acquired a Canon Pixma MP620 printer/scanner/copier. According to the manual, as far as wireless connection is concerned, ad hoc networking is not supported.

My existing network is ad hoc: I have a Dell desktop with a Belkin PCI wireless network card, an Acer laptop with build-in wireless capability, and a Netgear DG834, which is a wired router, connected to the desktop; this all works perfectly.

I would like to reconfigure my network as type access point, so that the printer can connect to it. Preliminary research seems to indicate that a wireless router is needed to be designated as the access point. However, I'm not keen to change my router until I've exhausted all other possibilities.

Is there any means whereby I can configure an access point network with my existing hardware, perhaps by designating the desktop as the access point rather than the router?
