My 14 yr old son has the internet on his pc in his bedroom. His pc is xp pro sp3. At the moment both myself and his pc are connected to the net via a belkin adsl wireless g router by cables (not wireless). The other day i caught him looking at sites he shouldn't be, but as he knows a little about pc's it's not worth me changing the settings on his pc as he'll only set them back. So my question is, can i restrict what he browses from my pc downstairs through the router? I use ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

Thanks.

Well with XP, if he uses IE, but only IE you can assign passwords to access certain websites. But this can be easily overcome by using a different web browser.

you could install ultravnc server on his pc and install the viewer on yours, this would not stop him from browsing things he shouldnt be but allow you to check up on what he is doing.

if you have norton internet security you could set that up to only allow sites that it thinks ir reasonable.

or why not make him a limited user and a second account you only have access too that is an adminastrator, and instill this http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

not sure how good that is but if his is not an adminastrator it will stop him using a third browser, and also stop him disabling this program hopefully

Believe me , if he wants to view these sites then theres a millions ways hes going to view them, proxy sites mainly, if i were you id just show him up, sit him down show these websites to his mother , and grandparent's if there open minded and have a "family meeting" talk about his habits and stuff, make him extremely uncomfortable... or just ban him from using the computer in your house, 1 week per website found :) but he could also have the naughty stuff downloaded from sites or sent from friends, if you want a fast and simple solution id go with the ban option, change his account password , change the safe mode password and add a password to the bios and start up :)
