Hello,
can anyone supply a step by step guide on how to link two computers for gaming with just a crossover cable

You just need a crossover ethernet cable and plug it in to both PCs.

Probably the best way would be to set up Internet Conenction Sharing on one PC. This would enable DHCP etc for the other computer to connect to.
