Default D-Link G604T Generation 2 Modem Problems.

Hi,
With recent problems with my internet, called my ISP and they said it wasn't anything on their end, so I think my modem is the culprit. Problem is, my internet now cuts consistently every 5-10 minutes, without fault. My modem is D-Link DSL G604T Generation 2.
- I automatically get an IP from my modem, so I've tried setting my computer to get a set one, which doesn't fix it.
- I've tried re-running the modem setup wizard, which doesn't fix it either.
- In advanced settings of my modem/router, there is an ADSL setting. It is set to ADSL2+ Multi-Mode. I'm not sure if I should change it, and if that setting is changed according to ISP, but the available options are
ADSL2+ ITU G.992.5
ADSL2+ ITU G.992.5 with DELT
ADSL2+ Multi-Mode except T1.413
ADSL2 Multi-Mode
ADSL2 ITU G.992.5
ADSL2 ITU G.992.5 with DELT
ADSL2+ Multi-Mode except Annex M
ADSL2+ Annex M
there are others, but they are ADSL not ADSL2+

I've read about upgrading firmware, but if it goes wrong, my modem is rendered useless, am I correct? I'm not sure if I should go with upgrading firmware or not, because I'm not sure if that is the problem, although my modem firmware is outdated.

Any help/ideas appreciated.
Thanks.

there isn't a link directly to my router model, so you will have to select from the dropdown menus.

Found something in some logs.
Quote:
The IP address lease 10.1.1.4 for the Network Card with network address 00218559E1C8 has been denied by the DHCP server 10.1.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).
Could this be related? Because to get the modem/router configurations in the browser, I type 10.1.1.1

Did you see this on D-Link's Troubleshooting webpage for the G604T ? :

Intermittent disconnections
Check the ADSL light status on your router when your connection goes down:
If the ADSL light is not coming on, that means that the router is not detecting ADSL signal on your phone line.

- Try using shorter line extension cord. Avoid knots and coils on the telephone cord;
- Check with your ISP/Telco company if there are noises/faults on your line.
- In your router configuration page go to Advanced > ADSL and set Modulation type to G.dmt (this disables ADSL2+);
- Update your router to the latest firmware;

If ADSL light is stable try setting your computer's network card IP address:
Control Panel > Network Connection > Local Area Connection Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties:
IP address: 10.1.1.99
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1
DNS: 61.88.88.88 (or whichever DNS your ISP is using).

If disconnections are only affecting wireless workstations please see General Wireless troubleshooting.

Ok, ADSL light is on when disconnected, already called ISP and they said there weren't problems. Our modem to wall is >1m, and it isn't coiled, but I will try to find a shorter cord. I don't want to set the modulation type to G.dmt because I'm using ADSL2+, which it states it disables, and I'm not too sure about updating modem/router firmware, because I don't know if it will render my modem useless, as stated in the first post.

I've also tried setting the IP address to my computer, but I used a different one, the one my computer was already allocated, but I'm trying 10.1.1.99 now. Will see how it goes.

And none of the computers in the house are wireless, so that's not part of the problem.

Thanks.

Hmmm, it didn't work. Still experiencing disconnects.
My last option I guess is to update modem firmware, but I'm not too sure of the procedure and the risks involved.

Yep it's worth doing .... I'm sure you won't have a problem.
I have done a few and it only takes seconds to update.
There's a readme file with the firmware download, that gives you full instructions plus do's and dont's and a release notes file.

Ok, successfully updated the firmware.
But now the settings, I saved them before the firmware update, and the router has an option to save and load, which was easy. But loading takes ages for some reason, and I've checked that some settings aren't what they were before, like the ADSL2+ setting in my first post.
Is it meant to be this long? I'm still waiting, and it's been 10 minutes. Internet seems to be working fine for the while though...

Well, I decided to take a chance and I closed it.
Settings some settings that I knew before, have been restored, but not sure about the others...
Seems to be working fine so far though, no disconnections. Will see how it goes.
Once again, Thanks.

Still disconnecting...
Any more options? Would the last verdict be that my modem is faulty?

It's possible. Are you doing all your testing on one PC or are other PCs still misbehaving ?
