Default Desktop to router question?

hey all, my mom wants to get a desktop with xp. she also wants internet. this is my current set up, my modems connected to my router via Ethernet cable and my laptop is connected to my router wireless. now instead of investing in a wifi card so she can have internet could i just buy the required amount of Ethernet cable to reach from my router to her room and just plug one end into an available Ethernet port on my router and the other into her desktop? or would i have to install my modems drivers onto her desktop first and install the routers software onto the desktop to before it would pick up a connection ?

Just the cable needed. No drivers, nothing.
