It might work but what exactly is the disc that came with your other machine? It may have just been a system repair disc, that can not be used for a fresh install.

You would also need to ensure that all of your stuff is backed up before you installed XP.

Once XP is installed, it will work just like any other XP computer, sans all of Vista's problems.

The disc I have that came with the old pc looks like a genuine Windows disc. Gold coloured, Microsoft logo, 'Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition' 'Do not make illegal copies etc.' 'Version 2002.'
So I take it that it is a genuine article. The service pack 2 cd is a genuine one that I sent away for when it first came out. All I have to do is to find the authorisation codes.
What do you think? Worth a try? I take it that I won't be able to get Vista back if I make a complete omlette of the operation.

Edit to my last post at 23.40. Just noticed that the XP disc says "'for distribution with a new PC only". Anyway it's a bit academic as I can't find the bloody authorisation codes. Hope I haven't wasted too much of everybody's time.
Now What??

It depends what you wan to do really.

Either buy a copy of XP for 60 odd quid and install that on your Vista machine.

Or stick with Vista and get used to it.

If you want to go to XP we can explain the process.

Hope this helps

Thanx S.G. I am still pondering what to do. If I decide to go back to XP I'll post on this thread for some advice if that's OK. Meantime thanks for everyone's patience.
