hello
well i'm having a problem installing a direct cable network between 2 laptops
i found a guidethat explains that i sould define the IP address on each computer:

host PC:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

guast PC:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
defult gateway: 192.168.0.1
preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1

well i did so and when i connected the two computers nothing happense
is there anything else i should do or check?
well thats about it

Are you using a cross over or twisted pair network cable for the connection as a standard network or patch cable will not work unless using a router, for a direct cable connection without a router you will need a cross over cable

No .... a crossover cable may look the same as a standard Ethernet (RJ45) cable, but it is wired differently. See here for illustration.

do both laptops have an internet connection, if so you need to give them both static ip addresses, as they are currently both using dynamic, which means it can change every time you boot it up.

The reason its not working is because your not using a crossover cable, check phils post for a diagram, also you dont need to set a gateway on either machine, nor do you need to set dns.
