Ethernet Cable

I have bt home broadband when i but in the ethernet cable nothing changes in the network. When i put in the disk it says it work from the filter to the modem but the error is when it checks the connection between the modem and the computer. The computer is old will this be a problem

please help

Have a look in Device Manager and check that your Network Card (NIC) is enabled.
