Default Ethernet cable

me and my friend are trying to connect 2 PS3's to my router so we can play LAN together. we have tried both using wireless but when one PS3 signs in, the other is signed out. we tried to use an ethernet cable to connect one to the router but when we connected it, the PS3 still told us to insert an ethernet cable and there was no light on the router to show that the second ethernet slot was in use. (the first slot is where the PC is connected).

How can we get the second slot working?

I just found this piece of information out, maybe this is relevent to your situation.

"You may have to set up a custom IP address for each system in the router's DHCP settings, matching them up with the MAC address of each PS3. Once that is set up edit the addresses into the PS3 network settings."

Yeh, I expect you will need to give them both reserved IP addresses in the router or give them both different static IP addresses in the PS3 network configuration.

There were people having similar problems on the PS3 forums, you might want to post there and someone might be able to tell you how they got it to work.
