Im not a comptuer savy guru, but a little common sense goes a long way. Ive set up my wireless network at my house, twice as a matter of a fact, with 2 different computers. Sooo, setting up a 3rd at my buddy's house, with in fact my old PC, should be no problem. I used a NETGEAR WGT624 router. I did as the instructions instructed and went through all the steps. The wizard said everything was good to go. The PC showed a godd connection as did the laptop. I showed packets being sent & received on both PCs. But for the life of me I could not get either to surf the internet. I could get the laptop to access GOOGLE & make search results, but when I clicked on the results, it could'nt make a connection. When I unhook everything, hook up either PC directly into the modem, I have no problems. The tower PC that Im using was the one that Ive hooked up to a previos wireless network with a Trendnet router. It was simple and worked fine. But this NETGEAR router I cant just seem to figure out.
Heres what Im running: PC to DSL with Motorola modem and a Netgear WGT624 router & a HP Laptop running on VISTA. The tower is running on XP. When I take the Laptop to my house, he has no problem hooking up to my network. I really dont wanna spend too much time on this, but before I just go buy a different router, I thought Id check here and see if its something simple that Im overlooking. Ive gone into all the network connection settings and checked "auto detect" and all that stuff. Ive turned off the firewall and blah blah. Its something simple Im not doing thats the culprit, I think. It may be that stupid Netgear modem as well. Thanx yall |

Sure Google and stuff isn't being cached? Clear the cache and see if you can still access them. I'd also try a DNS flush with ipconfig /flushdns.

Doesnt the DNS flush automatically after a day or so? Ive gone back 36 hrs later and tried to no avail. Ive googled this problem and found that this problem is common with NETGEAR routers and that folks could access Google, but nothing else. My buddy had used this router in the past at his old place and had no problems. I would think that his laptop would at least connect since he had used it before. The laptop is showing an excellent connection, but won't surf the web. Both the router and modem have all the correct lights lit up showing a good connection. I'll go try what ya said and see if that'll do it.

You might also change your DNS server to something like opendns or another server.

Have you tried both connecting to the router by LAN and shutting off the Wireless? You've checked that they are both automatically find IP addresses and DHCP is on?
Might try resetting the router to factory settings and give it another go. |
