Default HELP! cannot connect new computer to established broadband network.

please help me! i spent 5 hours trying to research and fix this issue last night only resulting in more issues (unimportant and since fully resolved)!

I have an new Dell Inspiron 530 running on Vista. I installed a Belkin F5D7000 internal wireless card successfully, and tried to connect to my existing network. the computer finds the network, accepts the passcode and 'connects' with 'limited connectivity' which as we all know means it won't do anything. i seem to be unable to access the internet through this setup no matter what options it gives me!

the network runs from a 2wire590 router controlled by my previous computer. it has been successfully running for 3 years with a cycle of different computers connecting to it in that time, including one via a Belkin USB wireless card, but never a Vista computer before.

is this a Vista issue? a hardware issue? or am i just being an idiot?

any advice on how to fix this problem would be much appreciated.

I'm far from a networking guru but it sounds like your modem is not assigning an IP to the computer and therefore you're not able to connect.

I would explore DHCP configurations in the modem and see if you can figure out why.

Default HELP! cannot connect new computer to established broadband network.

i'm not up to scratch on what DHCP configurations mean (i'm assuming it's the available IP addresses?), but the settings say:

DHCP range: 172.16.1.33 - 172.16.1.250

current connected computers are between the .33 and .37

i'm not sure i dare try manual configuration without advice. neither do i know how to manually enter the IP on the new computer. any further suggestions/advice?

Default HELP! cannot connect new computer to established broadband network.

On the new computer, go to Start - Run - type in CMD

Type in ipconfig /all

Right click and click Select All

Then press Enter

That will copy the information to the Windows Clipboard. Come back to this forum and in a new reply right click and select Paste

Default HELP! cannot connect new computer to established broadband network.

my friend informs me it's most likely the DNS server lines that are supposed to display the IP address, which is seemingly not assigned. is this correct? and how do i fix it?

Default HELP! cannot connect new computer to established broadband network.

it seems the simplest solution all along was a basic ethernet cable to the router! all is solved... just a shame i bothered buying a wireless card, that'll have to wait for another time.

time to play Spore now

Sorry for the late reply, but I do have to sleep, work and eat at some point in time!

The problem with your wireless connection is, as Carbon predicted, a problem with the DHCP handouts.

Do you want to try and fix this problem, or is using the ethernet OK?

Default HELP! cannot connect new computer to established broadband network.

sorry, my impatience has been growing the last few days due to how long i spent researching and trying to fix this issue, as well as the fact that a 12 hour power cut hindered progress further! please don't take offence.

i'm fine using ethernet for the time being as these 2 computers are destined to sit side by side anyway (for different uses, not both at the same time... mind you it is a useful setup for researching papers i have to write!). i'm sure at some point i'll regret not fixing this problem, but right now i'm glad to not have to worry about it! i shall return if problems arise. in any case it's useful to know where the problem lies!

thanks very much guys for your time!
