Me again!
I have now completely formatted and re-installed Windows XP on both my PC and my laptop. Fingers crossed, all seems fine so far and everything is working as it should. I've even managed to set up the wireless connection between the two all by myself and that's working as well. It's secure too so don't know how I managed it without going wrong at some stage but I suppose I have to be able to get something right at some stage! My new problem, however, concerns home networking the two computers. I have run the Network Setup Wizard on both, and set up a network on the PC called Village1. MY Network Places shows SharedDocs on PC under LOCAL NETWORK, and SharedDocs on Laptop under THE INTERNET. But.......nothing at all shows under My Network Places on the laptop and when I try to access via View Workgroup Computers I get the following message: Village1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found. I've tried to do a bit of troubleshooting myself but am getting very confused. Should I have whatever is known as network adaptors on both computers and if so, what on earth are they?! Thought I had this sorted out with the wireless adaptors, but do they not do the home network side of the job, and only the internet thing? Once again, any help would be very gratefully received Thanks yvonne |

Have I set them up on the same workgroup? Think so, but might need guidance to check out what that actually means - sorry!
No, don't know how to set manual IPs so again, help would be great Thank you |

Right click my computer on the desktop, then properties.
Then the tab with something like computer name. In there you can change the workgroup. Both PCs must match, common workgroup names are WORKGROUP or MSHOME in CAPS. Reboot and see it that changes anything. |

Open network connections and right click Local Area Connection.
Click properties then double click TCP/IP. In there go-to the second tab and enter a these settings: Computer 1: IP: 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1 Computer 2: IP: 192.168.1.3 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1 |

Oh dear, have hit a problem straightaway.
Computer 1 is fine in that it has a Local Area Connection icon that says "Connected,Firewalled" Computer 2 has the icon, but it says that the Local Area Connection has a network cable unplugged (would maybe make sense if the broadband modem isn't attached to Computer 2 but is fed via wireless?) So......tried as you suggested on the "1394 Connection" whatever that is, and no joy. Same error message. Only other available icon is on Computer 2 and is the Wireless Network Connection Thanks for your time on this Yvonne |

Make sure you remove them from Local Area Connection and 1394 Connection as they are not needed in there for computer 2. |
