Hi - I have a Dell Dimension 2350 desktop (about 5 years old) with XP Home SP2 on it and a Dell Latitude D600 (refurbished & age unknown) with XP Professional SP2 on it. I recently installed a wireless modem router - the desktop is hard wired to it with an ethernet cable and the laptop connects wirelessly. Internet is working fine on both. I went through Network Setup wizard on both machines and setup wizard said they were both networked to workgroup called MSHOME. But neither computer can see the others shared folders/docs. When I check on the desktop to look at workgroup computers it eventually tells me I don't have permission even though I am logged on as administrator. Does this make sense - can anyone help?

| It's a common problem which I and many others are yet to find a solution.

Do you reckon there would be any point in my speaking to the Dell Technical Helpline for advice? Or is it a Windows XP problem?

OK thanks anyway. As long as it isn't something that I have changed the settings of - but by the sounds of things, it's not a simple matter. Ho hum.

You can try setting manual IPs for each machine, that has somtimes worked for me but not always. Also try sharing some folder on each machine.

This has to be the only thing that vista beats XP on enough to buy it. In fact on its own actually. Can i just make it clear that network setup wizard is hopeless. When you go into my network places click "view other workgroup computers" on the left. They should come up. pick the other computer. It will ask you for a user name and password. Just type in the username and password of the other computer. Then it will come up all shared folders.
