Well ..... I'm an expert of 4 days now and it seems to be behaving OK .... it does it's automatic backups etc., as scheduled and works well as a Server for storing data from the Network.

Seems quite stable and appears to do what it says on the tin.

I only wish I were going the WHS route. I got an edition of Windows Server 2003 I setup on my home network just to play around with and use for file sharing, print sharing, etc.... and Server 2k3 is too much for the 4 pc's I have. After reading this thread I am now interested in getting WHS and scrapping the 2k3.

What do you mean too much?

To much to set up?

It can easily do all that WHS does, except for the automatic backups.

WHS FTW!
Did you do it from the trial version though ?, as I am led to believe that this is different.

No biggie .... I just pointed it out to warn of possible danger

Well my impression of the two server editions was, WHS was a stripped down, UI enhanced version to be navigated through easier and more appealing to the average home user. WIth only 4 PC's at home why not go with the easier one? WHS also adds backups and media streaming with Media Connect. It also allows remote access and easier control of your home network machine. In my opinion Server 2k3 being more advanced is too much for just 4 PC's, why not go with the user friendly, UI enhanced stripped down version. Afterall, my main concern is media sharing! Which WHS is greatly setup for!

I hope this clears anything up!

I would absoloutely reccomend WHS for any home environment, there really is nothing better. What I meant though was that you said that you couldn't Get S2K3 to file share, which it can do.

But yes, definitely go with WHS. Far less hassle. I have a couple of servers running S2K3 doing different tasks but still use a Windows Home Server as well.

I'm sorry if what I wrote was misleading. I just got the S2k3 machine. I intended on using it for a file server and a print server. I jst said I wish I would have known about WHS before I got the S2k3. It seems easier and more friendly. I haven't even tried to setup the roles yet! I'm having issues with the DHCP scope. Any ideas!

I don't have time right now unless you have a specific question.

Maybe Friday / Saturday night I can give you a hand. Send me a PM if you want.

You can definitely get S2K3 doing what you want.

Have you thought about selling it and buying WHS instead?

Well it was an evaluation copy that I activated so I only have it for like 120 days I think! So after the 6 months (maybe sooner) I will look into WHS. I also will downsize from 4 Pc's to just 2 in 2 months so I really don't even need either, if I decide to get a full version of either I will defintely look into WHS.

I'll send ya a PM about the DHCP scope Q.
