You can do it with USB, Firewire, most Parallel ports, all serial ports and (of course) a single crossover ethernet cable and no extra software at all. It comes down to what ports have you got and do you already own a cable to do it with. Several operating systems (like Microsoft Windows since 2000) have built in the peer-to-peer transfers on several of those ports (like Firewire and USB and Parallel and Ethernet at least).

Well if i can do it without software, then how do i got about doing this? its mainly for LAN parties. we alway end up having maps that other people in the party dont. so i only need to do this for certain files.

Surely a memory stick's quicker than cabling? In every case with a cable you either run a program at each end which shows you what looks like a graphic FTP screen, or you integrate the connection into your networking. Both ways leave traces on both machines. The words to google are eg. "peer to peer firewire" or "peer to peer USB" and maybe your operating system if you really want to do it. I'd only go that way if the files were bigger than my memory stick.

Yep ... a simple USB2 Data Transfer Cable, like this one is easy enough to use, but you need to install the acoompanying software on both machines.

As spot says, if you know your way around Networking, a simple crossover cable (about £5) can be used, assuming both PCs have an ethernet port. You can then simply set up a Small Home/Office Network on each machine, using the inbuilt Windows wizards.

You can then share any folders/files you wish.

what if we are using a router? then do i have to buy any cables? and when it comes to 1 person who has the file with 7 people who need the file, a flash drive cant give them all at the same time the files. plus a lot of times we're dealing with a few GB at a time.

Hang on you started this thread asking "is there some sort of software and cable i can get so i can just connect a wire to the computer i want to send the file to?"

Now you talking about a Router .... if you are using a Router and already have a Network set up fo these PCs, why are you looking any further than sharing the file(s) on the Network ????

OK, well in that case you wouldn't need anything as you would just share the files on the Network.

The only cables you would need are the Ethernet cables to the Router, from each PC, or if it's a Wireless Router and all the PCs have wireless network cards fitted, then no wires at all.
