Installing Wireless Capability on a Desktop PC?

Am i right to say that installing wireless capability on a desktop PC ( a wireless card or something else ..which i don't know) would enable the PC to have wireless connection with any wireless router and with any ISP? Not sure if ISP matters though...

The reason is that i do not want to use a wireless adapters because its fiddly, messy to work with & also i dont think the wireless connections are that good..
