Hi,

I'm trying to get the internet on my G3 ibook 10.4.8 from my XP desktop. The desktop has two network ports. One to the router and the other via crossover cable to the ibook.

This is the error message I am constantly faced with.

"An error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled."

"Internet connection sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address
that is required for automatic IP addressing"

So far I have changed the router IP to 192.168.0.10

(1)Set my ibook connection
ip:10.10.10.1 subnet:255.0.0.0

(2)Set the network card on the XP going to the ibook
ip:10.10.10.2 subnet:255.0.0.0 default gateway: 10.10.10.1

(3)Set the network card on the XP going to the router as standard except ip is 192.168.0.10

all this to no avail, I have also tried setting (2) as 192.168.0.1. Also tried using them all as variations of 192.168.0.X

On occasion I could get the PC to see the mac and take files but i couldn't get the mac to see the pc. When this was working my internet stopped.

My internet is very slow now, I'm not sure if this is a problem to do with me working on it or outside genral slowness.

I have a feeling it is a problem on the desktop side rather than the ibook but that's an uneducated guess.

why dont you just buy a networking device for the ibook? PCMCIA or USB are cheaper, you can get a good name for about 15 quid.

but presuming you have a good answer......

go to
My Computer > My Network Places then right click the icon for your XP and choose enable sharing.

if theres no icon or there is but that doesnt work delete everything from the network: printers computers, anything thats on your network and click the wizard to set it up again, connect all cables modems ADSLs routers wireless devices networked cabled devices anything ou want on the network and run the wizard.

i had a fairly similar problem, so i effectively did the classsic "turn it off an on again" but in the form of "unistall it and reinstall it"

you never know...

I have resolved the internet issue on the PC by changing the metric values of the two connections and can now get files from the mac to the pc.

I still can't get the internet on the mac or files from the PC.

Just for lan sharing files with two Computers, try doing the IP's of the two same like:

1.Computer:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subbnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Than:
2.Computer:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subbnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

This should work but don't forget to configure the Firewall!!!
