Ive just upgraded my internet speed about six days ago, my internet provider said it would take up to 10 days to get the correct speed but when i was on 1mb i could get upto 30Kb, but now ive upgraded to 8mb i can only seem to get 40Kb. What speed should i get from 8mb download speed?
Thanks for any help!

ISPs lie a lot, read the small print, they say upto 8MB.

Try speedtest.net to see what speed you are really getting.

Thanks for the reply. Ive just done the speed test thing and these are the results from it.

Problem is is that i cant actially dowmload at this speed which is annoying.

What is the typical speed of an 8mb broadband speed?
Will it make much of a difference that i am using a wireless router?

Thanks!

That is bad, real bad.

It's like 0.15 of a megabyte.

Try doing the speedtest on cable not wireless.

Also are you using any P2P software?

Do a spyware and virus scan.

Thanks again for the reply.-

I tryed again on all three of me computers,
First i tried the laptop which is a wireless connection and got about 1100kb/s download and 300kb/ upload speed.

I then tried the wired PC which got this:

Lastly i tried the PC i got crap results on yesterday and got:

I do still have to wait a couple more days until they have fully found what my maximum speed is but it is just taking age.

If you could give me some feed back on them results and tell me how good they are that would be great!

That's a 1-2MB average.

Which is normal for some adsl customers, it really depends on how far you are away from the BT exchange.

You didn't answer my question about using downloading while doing the speedtest, P2P software will dramatically mess with speed.

I dont have any p2p on the laptop or the wired pc, but i do on my main pc.
I didnt have it running while i was doing the speed test because i no it will decrease the speed.
Also none of the computers have viruses on, i checked with Nortan internet security.

Do a spyware scan on all the machines using spybot from our downloads section, remove anything it finds.

Norton isnt great, it doesn't pickup most spyware.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

I have done a spyware sweep with Spybot and it has taken off all the spyware that was on my pc. I havnt done a proper speed test again but have been getting a download speed of about 330kb/s. I am going to wait until Thursday then i will do a few speed tests and if it isnt anywhere near what tiscali said then i will ring them up and see what happens.

Thanks for all the help!

330kb/s is roughtly 2.5MB when downloading from a server.

Server downloads are measured in kilobytes per second.

That speedtest is measuring in kilobits per second, so, even though it is giving 10x the scores it is the same speed.

Also don't use P2P as a guide of your line speed, it is not accurate.
