Default LAN/Internet connection problems

Right, this is going to be quite long but is so I can give the whole picture of the problem.

My internet connection has always worked fine with my current setup but for some reason when I turned the computer on the other day I couldn't connect to the internet properly. (It usually just connects itself automatically.

My setup:
Modem - Netgear
Router - Belkin
Asus M2N-SLI onboard network card

My computer is directly wired through this but offers a wireless connection and print sharing to the other computers in my house.

I can connect to the internet now but to do so I have to use a belkin wireless mimo G+ USB adapter to do so.

Before using the adapter to connect I have tried everything that I could imagine to be wrong. Automatically obtaining the IP address, changed the ports on the router and modem, everything is plugged in. As a result of none of this working I even reinstalled windows as I got so fed up with it. This is now leading me to believe that it is a hardware problem and not software related.

I would use this network adapter to connect permanently but I don't get the same speeds as I would as if I were wired.

Any ideas to what the problem could be? Is it possible that one of the network cables could be damaged from heat or something? - I have had these for about a year.

I don't think that it is the router or modem damaged as whilst my internet connection was down, the other PC's around the house could still connect. The motherboard is only about a month old so it shouldn't be that which is damaged.

Please help, this has been bugging me for a few days and all my attempts have failed.

Ohh, and if I try to ''repair'' the Local Area Connection it never gets past the IP step and tells me to contact the network installer (whom is myself)

One final thing, I have to disable the local area connection in ''my network connections'' for the wireless adapter to work properly.

H E L P..............please

If you have reinstalled Windows and are certain that you have all the Motherboard Chipset drivers and Network Card drivers installed, then it is sounding like a hardware issue.

I believe this mobo has dual LAN ports, I assume you have tried both and also tried a new RJ45 Cable.

I guess one quick solution would be to buya PCI Network card for £5 and use that, however if the system is new, you may want to return it under warranty instead.

One other thought, you didn't actually say, but if you have a Cable (Virgin) connection, with seperate Modem and Router, try connecting directly to the Modem, this may help narrow it down a bit.

Yes, it has two network ports, both of which I have tried. I am yet to try new cables as I don't have any spare, but I wasn't too sure whether this was a likely cause.

Would it still be acceptable to return this to Asus. I bought it brand new of Ebay but I don't have any receipt for it, which I would assume you would probably need. I'll contact the seller to see if he has it. Obviously warranty is the final solution.

Try connecting directly to the Modem first, if you are with Virgin.

Default LAN/Internet connection problems

I'm with tiscali. I tried to connect directly through the modem, which worked, so then I thought I should see if the router is now working so plugged it all back in. That did not work so decided to go back to just the modem, which now decided that it didn't want to work.

I think that the computer must just be looking for the network connection in the wrong place.

By using the windows messenger live connection problems it gave me error 8007ee7. It also says that DNS is unable to resolve IP addresses and there is an error with key ports apparently.

In ''my network connections'' they show as connected, yet I get no internet access. The server does ping by using the ''ping [my ip address]'' command and sends and receives packets.

I have phoned tiscali and their server is fully operational. Oh, and by the way, my firewall is disabled whilst I try to work out this problem, so that is not the problem.

Any ideas?

When you carried out the above changes, did you power down all the kit, i.e. Modem, Router and the PC, before testing again ? ..... if not try again .... this is important.
Also, it may be a good idea to do a reset on the Router .... there is normally a small hole on the back, which will accept a paper clip or similar ..... with the Router powered up, hold this in for 30 secs. This will reset it to factory settings, so any wireless securuty etc., will need to be re-entered.
Also check to see whether any new firmware is available for the Router, especially if you are using Vista.

OK, I have now sorted the problem. I just entered the IP addresses for the net gear modem and the router and then configured the settings in my browser.

I believe the problem to have been caused by following this tutorial on youtube to make torrenting faster.

I guess by doing this I must have messed around with my ports and ip config and so the computer couldn't find where to connect.

Could anyone verify that this is the likely cause? If not I shall follow this again as it gave me much, much better speeds
