Default LAN problems

Hi can anybody help please. I am trying to set up my sons computer on a wired network. I have connected it up via the lan port but it doesn't seem to see anything. I have checked the cable and that works fine on my laptop. Looking at the control panel/ network connections panel, there is nothing there. I have tried running the wizard but that does recognise anything either. Any ideas please

I would if I could. I deleted the non working network icon that was in the 'network connections' box and now there is nothing in that box. I have enabled the LAN tab in windows firewall but that hasn't worked either. The LAN port has a slow flashing light and is on the motherboard itself. I was wondering if it was worth buying a PCI nwetork card in case there is aproblem with the port!!

Could well be a problem with the port, pci cards are cheap enough so you won't be losing much just finding out

If the Ethernet port is on the motherboard, it may be faulty or require drivers.

If it is on a expansion card, that card will need a reinstallation of drivers.

This is probably the problem.

Definitely time to reinstall windows I think! Do you have an XP CD? Select the install but repair existing installation option. (Not repair console)

I have tried to reinstall that bit form my xp disc but no joy. I think will reisntall the whole of xp but will that destroy any existing other programmes? I also tried to follow microsofts insructions for reisntalling the missing network icon but that didnt work either. I have looked at device manager and there is no network stuff there either. So I think its a reistall, I'll let you know

It will not remove any existing programs. At some stage it will ask if you want to repair an existing installation. (Not the Repair Console.)
