I recently upgraded my DSL plan to 6mbps and the max i have gotten is 620kbps. My laptop is new even. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You haven't provided any information that we can work with there at all.
What ISP is it?
What laptop do you have?
What windows version do you have?
How are you connected to the net? (direct to modem or via a router, wired or wireless)

My ISP is AT&T.
I have a HP DV5-1166us laptop that is running on windows vista.
I use a wireless router. Any other info?

My wireless router is a at least 3years old. Could that be a reason I am not getting the speeds that i should be getting? If so then what type of router should i get? once again all help is appreciated

6mbps / 8 = 750kb/s. And you will never get the "max" speed.

Unless you are seeing a significant decrease from another computer connected to the network, I would write this off as normal.

well the max i am getting is 600kbps..I just want to get the most that i can with my 6mbps plan..

I seriously doubt there is a problem then. Check your DSL modem's diagnostics for line noise and such if you think it should be higher, but this sounds normal.

so when it says 6mbps its not true? I dont get that at all..
