Default Logging on problem

Dear All,
First time so be gentle with me. I 've recently bought my daughter a laptop for university - Sony Vaio VGN-FZ18M running vista wireless enabled. Shes currently waiting for her internet connection in her halls of residence but in the meantime has been able to connect to the internet through the library and also believe it or not her local macdonalds. She right clicks the two computers on the taskbar and clicks on connect. A internet explorer window pops up and she enters the password and shes connected. This has worked perfectly until a couple of days ago. Now when she tries to connect the internet explorer window doesn't pop up so she can't connect (in normal mode). What makes it strange is if she goes into safe mode it works - the internet explorer pops up and she can connect. Any help would be greatly appreciated Simon

I'm not sure I understand.

To connect to a wireless network you open the network connection and scan for any available networks.
