Ok, I would like to think I know a fairish amount about networking.. it's not one of my stronger areas shall we say but I've still tried everything myself and google could think up.

Here's my setup:

Xbox 360 Premium 14GB >
Ethernet >
COMODO Firewall >
Asus P5QL PRO >
Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (Although it's actually not a PCI it's on the motherboard..?) >
COMODO Firewall >
Netgear WG111v2 Wireless USB >
Orange Livebox (A sin.. [Why the hells it Xbox approved?!]) >
The Wonders of the Internet

- And one would hope for Xbox Live to be next on that list, but it's not.

(Comodo is listed twice because I think it's currently set to monitor both connections, so it appears twice in the chain)

Some would say that's overkill on the information front.. But I'm so p*ss*d off with it that I thought I'd give you everything even remotely related.

Latest drivers for Netgear and Atheros controller are both installed.

I've tried dynamic and static settings, both fail on "retrieving IP address from the router" on the test configuration on the Xbox, and of course ideally I want it to be static anyway.

PC connects fine on static IP.

(These settings are from Network Connections within Vista on the PC)
So at the moment my PC is on:
IP: 192.168.1.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
Secondary DNS: blank

And Xbox:
IP: 192.168.1.16
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: blank
Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.1
Alternative DNS: blank

Should Xbox gateway be set to the PC's IP? Or the same Gateway as PC (Which returns a warning about multiple gateways)? Or is it correct left blank?

Also should the Xbox static settings be set on the Xbox AND the PC, or just one? If one which one?

And are there settings I need to alter in COMODO Firewall?

Thanks in advance guys, I'd really appreciate it..

Still would appreciate help on the above so I can use my Xbox for the next few monhs, but in a while I'm thinking I might get a Linksys Ethernet Bridge

Would the 360 in any way benefit from being attatched to a 108mbps bridge rather than a 54?

I play online and stream music from my PC (sometimes at the same time) if that makes any odds.

Thanks.

just to check before i write loads and its useless, your Xbox is connected by ethernet to your pc? which is connected by USB wireless to a router?

right okay then.
ive tried to do a similar setup, except i had a pc instead of a xbox 360, but i imagine they work the same.

first, you need to 'share' your wireless's internet connection. in XP its in the advanced function under the properties. you need to tick both boxes. you'll see when you look at it.

secondly, you need a 'crossover' Ethernet cable to connect your xbox to your pc.

thirdly, you need to set up your crossover. simple to do, il explain if you need it.

fourthly, the primary DNS for the xbox will be the ip of your pc on the crossover network, not the wireless.

Yeah done all that.. Unfortunatly

EDIT:
Actually I didn't do number 4.. I'll try it out now. What about the Default gateway what should that be?

oh, i see your problem then.

have you bridged the connections?

No.. but I've had it working before without them bridged?!

So my Xbox is now set:
IPv4: 192.168.1.16
Default Gateway: blank (what should this be?)
DNS Server: 192.168.1.5 (PC's IP)

The PC's default gateway is the 192.168.1.1 of the Livebox gateway router, should the 360 be the same or blank?

mctw, you're a beaut!

Bridged them after disabling ICS, and it works a treat. Still NAT Moderate, but I can work on that.

Thanks a lot mate, appreciate it, +1.
