Any ideas on how to get out on the internet on my newly reformatted Dell 2400 Dimension?
I tried a few connections. I tried going from my cable modem directly to my newly formatted pc. I tried going through my Linksys router WRT54G. No matter what I do I keep getting the Network Cable Unplugged on my LAN icon even if the plug is in. All my drivers are supposedly working according to the device manager. I think my NIC card is working but I'm not sure. Any ideas anyone out there in Juiceland? Thanks a bunch! action |

That icon will only show if the network drivers are installed and goes away when you plug in a cable. If you plug both ends of the cable in and both items are on and the message still shows then restart everything so you get allocated a fresh IP.

Hybrid,
I tried again and I still get the network cable unplugged icon with a red x on it. I tried two brand new cables and flipped both ends and still have the red x on the LAN icon. I restarted and still have the same problem. Any ideas?? I'm not sure if the pc is configured correctly because it is the first time I ever reformatted a pc. I D/l'd the drivers from the resource CD and I think I figured out how to install them correctly. The device manager said my Broadcom device is working. I feel that I may not be suited to get this going on the internet as I am a noob. Thanks for your reply. action |

The X goes away when a cable is plugged in both ends, nothing else is needed, no drivers, no IP, nothing. Can you test the cables on another machine?

Yes, I've tried the cables on my other working pc. They are fine. No matter what I do it seems that I can't get rid of the red X. That is why I thought that I did something wrong or missed something during the reformat process. I first thought it was the router so I plugged directly into my cable modem but still the red X was there. I don't know what else to try??

Oh I forgot to mention that there are no green lights or orange lights lit on my port. Sorry I forgot that important info. That is why I thought something else was wrong besides the cables.

Ah, well, it could be that the network port is not installed properly. Tried new drivers from the Dell website?

I D/L'd the drivers they suggested from my service tag for this model. But I used the ones that came on the resource cd. I'm not sure if they are the same. I made a disc of the drivers that they had on the website. But I'm not sure if they are the same ones I have on my resource cd from Dell. I'm not even sure if the ones I got from the website even work. As I said I used the resource cd.

I'm not sure which driver is the "network driver."

I just put in the disc I d/l'd of the dell drivers suggested for this pc. I extracted all those drivers. One seemed to be different than the ones on the resource disc. Also there is a Dell Bios floppy disc file. I just found an old floppy disc that I'm formatting right now. May the info on this floppy be helpful in solving my problem? Will this be a possible answer to why I still get the red x on my LAN icon?
I just got an error message that windows could not format this old floppy. Oh boy I guess I'm really in trouble. I have no other floppies on hand. |
