Default New Connection Problem

Can anyone help?!?!?

I am trying to setup a temporary dialup connection on my XP Home laptop (my broadband through a wireless netgear router is currently unavailable as I’ve just moved house). When I select the new connection and go through the wizard it starts to dial the 0800 number and then hangs up. When I retry it hangs almost immediately. I’ve tried querying the modem but get an error message about the COM port being open. I’ve tried other COM ports but get the same message. The modem appears to be working correctly in Device Manager. I have also disabled the Zonealarm firewall

Any help would be great as I’m doing an OU course and I’m stuffed without e-mail at least!

Default New Connection Problem

what 800 numbr are you trying to dial ? do you have to dial 9 to get an outside line ?
usually you have to install an isp's software first
I do not have a modem in the pc I am using right now, somewhere in the modem properties is " wait for a dial tone" and other settings. Try unplugging the phone line at your pc and plug into a phone, see if you can make a phone call.
