I have a wireless modem which i plug my actual modem into.

i can connect to this fiine pretty much on my ibook and my eeepc, vista had "issues" far too often so is connected to it all via another ethernet plugged into the back of the wireless modem [the modem's are right next to my desktop anyway...]

What i'd LOVE - but is it possible - is to be able to access files on my desktop - which is pretty much always on and connected - via my eee or ibook?

my ibook runs OS X 10.4.somethinguptodate and my eee runs Ubuntu sometimes, or XP..

I've tried conncted to my PC via the iBook but i always get 'alias has moved' errors, so i'm confused.

I know my other option is to buy either an airport extreme base station and plug my external into that, or buy a modem that lets you plug external drives into it, however, i'd like to access and modify stuff ON my pc, rather than the external [i'm super organised, tis all]

    Can anyone help me out?

There should be absolutely no trouble accessing shares on your PC via Linux on your eee. You will need samba installed on the latter.
    I think I am a signature, therefore I exist!
I believe a higher being has me as a signature...

    Hi

Am I right in thinking you PC is running vista.

If it is I am guessing that network sharing and discovery is turned off. You will need this turned on in order to share files.

The easiest way to do this is to click on the flag button (start) and then go to network. When this loads up their should be a yellow bar across the top. If you click on this, it will allow you to turn it on.
It should start working then. Firewalls etc can also be causing a problem.

I would be more than happy to look at your pc remotely and set it up correctly for you. Just let me know if you would like to do this.

    I hope this helps.
    Many Thanks

    Leo

I think you just need to move the files on your desktop to a shared folder, as you cannot access your files remotely if they are in My Documents by default unless you share them which is not recommended.

Me Eee could connect to my shared folders on the network fine, so it is definitely possible.
