We have a home built desktop tht has been running fine for a year and a half. When we try and conect to the internet using a wireless connection here is the problem. The wireless card picks up the network and shows full strength. But when we select to connect it drops to low or no connectivity. I bought a new wireless card same problem, we used a bridge, attached it to the ethernet connection on pc to pickup the wireless then same problem. I connected to the networks no problem with my laptop. i am not sure if this is a software or hardware problem. My son had the computer of his friends while there for the summer. So i am not sure what they did. They said It worked for a while then stopped. I replaced network drivers and did software repairs. Any suggestion or help would be great.

This should be in Networking, Modems & VoIP

anyway,

they may have accidently setup internet connetion sharing, so you could only connect to the internet through them, now the laptop is gone, you cannot reach it, so it doesnt connect.

the reason you see full strength is because that shows the network, not the internet, you can still use any wireless devices such as printers and scanners and see the network shared documents on any other computers.

I have taken this computer to a couple of differnet wireless networks and with the same results. It will show the network and then not connect. But all the other wireless devices connect fine. It is inside this PC. Would anyone know if there is a virus out there that would cause this?

Post a HJT log.

Download HijackThis Here
Once you have it downloaded install/save it to it's own folder!!! This is important for it to work properly.
For example save in C:\program files\hijackthis
You can then create a shortcut on the desktop.
Once installed open the program and select Do a system scan and save logfile.
**Important DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Save the log to your desktop.
In the next post click Go Advanced or Post Reply.
Post the entire log in your next post.

Is this a spyware/virus removal software? I will have to download it on another PC, then save it and transfer to the problem PC. The problem PC will not connect. Can you explain a little more, as you can guess i am leary about down loading anything. Thanks for you help.

HJT is a tool to help determine running processes and helps in identifying some types of Malware.
It is made by Trend Micro. Very trusted www.trendmicro.com
It should be used only with advice from someone with experience as it is a powerful tool and can cause damage used carelessly.
There is no installer that is why it needs to be save to the proper destination. For example C:\Program Files\ HijackThis That will ensure the backups created can be accessed easily in case of mistakes.
