Okayy, so I've googled this already, but found mixed results.
Currently got a wireless router downstairs, that has 4 ethernet ports on the back like normal. Got a ethernet cable running upstairs, but i'm looking to have more than one pc wired, so save me running another cable, can I use an old router as a switch? Current wireless router is a cable router, whereas the old one that I've found is a ADSL, but still has 4 ethernet ports on that back.. I'll buy a proper switch if i have to (if that will work), but i'd rather use what i've got and not waste my money. Is using the old router a good idea? If it works at all that is? I understand networks at their basics, but that's about it! Cheers, MCTW |

I think the reason that you got mixed results is because it varies, model to model.

You could post the model, but odds are especially if it's old noone will be familiar and have a clue whether it'll work or not, just try it and see if it'll work, and good luck!

Thanks for your input guys!
The routers an old BT branded thing, which doesn't let you alter any IP settings or whatnot, so gave it up as a bad job :-P Was worth a go though! |
