Hi,

i got a problem with USB 2.0 print servers. I have tried two different models. The first one was same Edimax, now it's LevelOne FPS-9022. Both find the printer (HP LaserJet 1022) which is connected with printserver and they recognise if is priter on or off. Problem is current status. If is printer on, the status is still "paper out" (with a lot of paper in). I think that is why the printer doesn’t print – I can send page for print, but nothing happen. Printer works normally connected with PC.

What steps did you take when selecting the print server to make sure it was compatible with your network, your workstation operating systems and your printer? I only ask because it's a bit like threading several needles at once, you need to line them all up properly or you can't do it. USB print server compatibility is the be-all and end-all of choosing which one to buy, the default assumption has to be "this won't work with that".

I didn't find list of compatible printers so i check only if is it 2.0 USB. And network compatibility? There is no extra settings, just one switch. All computers in network running on xp prof.

A print server has to take information both ways. The computer sends to the printer, the computer queries the printer, the printer makes announcements. Print servers need to know a bit about the printers they support, especially when the printer attached to them was designed by Hewlett Packard. The reason is that HP make their own brand print servers and they're notorious, HP, for stopping other people's interfaces from working with their equipment so that people have to buy HP-related products. I had a huge fight with an early page-fed fast workgroup scanner that would only talk to a Netware server because HP owned Novell at the time. I wasn't happy.

There were 50 internal HP Jetdirect 615n print servers on ebay.co.uk this month, four of them went including delivery for under £15. They're the product that HP recommend for the Laserjet 1022. It might be worth seeing if you can find one like that rather than fighting the system.

I don't want to buy third print server in 5 days :/ I am not sure but HP using NetBEUI which is supported.

The printer has no networking at all so it's not using NETBEUI, it's just using the USB2 connector. It was built expecting to plug into a computer and to be able to access the computer's USB2 bus, and the print server's translating all that traffic into TCP/IP on your ethernet LAN. It's obviously not making a perfect job of it. With print servers, seriously, you have to know that it can rather than assume that it will. They're NOT interchangeable parts.
