I am using an ADSL USB modem, so it has no ethernet port, with a CAT5e cable between the Laptop and 360 or PC.
The connection seems to be made but it will say "This connection has limited or no connectivity".
I have included an image of ipconfiall output.
I am able to use the 360 as a media extender and use Media Center features.
I am having the very same trouble when trying to connect my Desktop and Laptop together. I have enabled connection sharing and DHCP, DNS etc but to no avail.
I hope someone can aid me.

If it connects as a media extender then it means the fault is with the internet itself, do you get internet on the laptop or desktop?

Right.

What you want to do is definitely possible, and you are right in thinking you need to use Internet Connection Sharing.

A crossover cable is basically just when two wires are switched over inside the cable. You need to use them traditionally when you directly connect to end devices, like PCs or consoles, or a daisy chaining hubs.

BUT

An XBOX 360, unlike the older XBOXs, does not require a cross over cable. It is clever enough to auto manipulate the port to work.

On the other hand, if you want to connect one computer to the 'net through another, then you will need a crossover cable. You could also use a cross over cable with the 360 if you so desired.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm going to go from the start to eliminate any errors. I didn't write all this out by the way, some came from a dark corner of the XBOX site.

To connect to Xbox LIVE using Windows ICS through your USB modem:

1. Before connecting any cables, turn off your cable or DSL modem, PC, and Xbox 360 console. (If you have an external modem, unplug it from its power source to turn it off.)

2. Connect one end of your USB cable to the modem's USB port. Connect the other end to a USB port on your PC.

3. Connect one end of your Ethernet cable to your PC's Ethernet port. Connect the other end to the Ethernet port on the back of your Xbox 360 console.

4. Turn on your modem and your PC.

5. From your PC, configure Windows ICS to share your Internet connection. To enable Windows ICS on your PC, follow the instructions for your operating system:

XP

  1. Right-click the connection that you use to connect to the Internet. (You may see multiple connections listed, depending on your network.)

  2. On the shortcut menu, click Properties and then click the Advanced tab.

  3. Below Internet Connection Sharing, click the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.

  4. Click OK.
The connection to the Internet is shared to your Xbox console.

Vista

Follow this link:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...d1e9e1033.mspx

6. Once you've configured ICS, make sure your PC can access the Internet.

7. Turn on your Xbox 360 console with no disc in the disc tray.

8. If you've already used your Xbox 360 system for offline play, the Xbox Dashboard will open to the Xbox LIVE area. Select the Xbox LIVE banner. When you see the Xbox LIVE Marketplace you'll know you're connected to Xbox LIVE.

With any luck that should get it working. I hope.

It should also allow you to connect any other device, such as a laptop AS LONG AS you use a cross over cable.

If you have problems, the first thing you should do is disable any firewalls on the host computer / laptop. In fact, its probably a good idea to make sure you do that before you start, especially if it is Norton bloatware.

You can also try the Connectivity Wizard if you have problems:

Good luck!

Thanks for your help serverguy but i tried all the ics stuff from the website before starting this thread.
So i still cant get an ip address when testing the connection on the xbox, i thought a screenshot of ipconfig/all may have pointed something out to someone cause i dont have a clue about that stuff. I really have no idea why i cannot connect to xbox live through ics or how to find out what the problem is.
I hope someone can though.
