Well as far as the laptop and PC go i have used patch to crossover adaptors on either end of the cable. So now i am able to see shared folders and transfer between the two but i am still getting limited connectivity with a speed of 10mbps which makes 30gb along move. Also i am still getting error messages of
"......the network did not assign a network address to the computer"
Haven't tried the 360 yet cause i am still shifting files.
If anyone can help i will take any screenshots of any settings you need to know about in order to find the problem and get it sorted.

I don't really know what else to suggest.

But, there appears to be something seriously wrong (the host computer not handing out an IP address) but if this is the case, I cannot possibly understand how you can transfer files, albeit slowly.

Are you absolutely sure you have setup Internet Connection Sharing?

Can you try pinging 192.168.0.1 from the secondary computer? See what it comes back with.

Also, can you make sure the client computers are set to get a IP address and DNS Settings automatically.

Later tonight, if you are still having problems, I may have time to remote connect to your computer and see if I can see anything - and hopefully fix it.

PM me if you are interested.

Also, can you give me a new ipconfig /all output

Just do it as normal, but when it returns the result, right click, Select All, then press Enter.

That will copy it to the clipboard.

Then paste it in to a reply window on the forum. (Right click, Paste.)

Aslo i pinged that address from the desktop it came up with "Destination Host unreachable", "100% loss".
From ipconfig/all results on both pc and laptop list an IP address and when i ping those addresses i get "0% Loss". But i do not have a default gateway, if that matters? DNS is set to automatically assign.
Regarding ICS i needed that for the 360 but for PC to laptop i just want fast transfer speeds, so do i still need ICS for transferring between PC and laptop?

I am so confused by your network I don't really know what to suggest.

Can I have a ipconfig /all from the other computer as well please?

Lets try setting the Default Gateway on the host computer.
  1. Click the Start button, and select Control Panel.
  2. Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
  3. Click the Network Connections link.
  4. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon, and select Properties.
  5. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP.
  6. Click the Properties button.
  7. Select the Use the Following IP Address option.
  8. In the Default Gateway text box, type in 87.80.206.74
  9. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, click OK.
  10. Click the Close button.
  11. Restart your computer.
It is good if you get 0% loss when you ping the addresses. That means they are able to communicate well.

I need the other ipconfig /all so I can see why it doesn't get always get an IP address.

If you want to just share files, then you don't need ICS. But, something still does not seem right. In fact, it all looks a right mess.

I cannot understand why ICS did just not configure properly. It should just work.

All I can think is that there is some static IP addresses set somewhere, and they are in a different subnet.

Also, I don't think the BT Modem software is helping things.

Honestly, the easiest way would be to get a router. They are not expensive, especially second hand of eBay.

I just went into device manager in the laptop for NIC and saw that the full duplex settings were set to 10mbps so i have now changed it to 100mbps and the speed has changed accordingly. But i still get "limited connectivity ... might not be able to use some resources or connect to internet" warning.
But files are moving much faster which is one thing off the checklist.

Well regarding the 360 you wre right that ICS was not setup right, i had not selected Local area connection from the Home Networking Connection drop-down list. Now i get full connection speed with no errors and have already updated the Xbox, Thank you very much.

Glad we got there in the end. I had come to pretty much a dead end.... I knew there had to be something wrong with ICS because the IP addresses were well out and the reason that you got limited or no connectivity was that the host computer wasn't giving out and IP addresses.

No problems, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.
