I'm having problems with my wireless router. Normally when I power up the laptop it shows me connected to my wireless network. Now, it shows me as not connected and I have to open the box that shows what networks are available. From there I try to connect to my network but can't, and when I "diagnose the problem" I get a message saying "Windows cannot connect to [network]". The reason given is that "The Wireless Network Security Key is Not Correct".
Neither my wife or I have fiddled with the security settings, so I know they haven't been changed by us. And, I don't remember the password I originally used to set up the account and so I don't want to mess with that. For that matter, I wonder if somebody could have hacked our network and re-set the security password--I have no way of knowing. So what do you think is wrong? I already eliminated the possibility of the wireless card being haywire by connecting to one of the many unsecured networks in the neighborhood--briefly, just to see if I COULD connect to something. Suggestions are appreciated! JodyM |

So I went to Best Buy and had a chat with one of the sales guys about my wireless router problem. He said I pretty much have to set up a new network, but to do that I need the correct security password, and if I can't remember it, I'm pretty much out of luck. So I shelled out $60 for a newer, faster, longer range Linksys wireless router. All I had to do is go through the installation cd, transfer the cables from the old router to the new, and I was in business. Of course, this time I saved a text file to my desktop with my password info. I don't remember if I even had that option when installing the Netgear router. Anyway, things are working like a charm.

The Best Buy guy was lying out his teeth, as they usually do. A simple pencil-nub reset of the router will reset all the settings, even if you were locked out of both the network and the router.

Yep, you got basically conned. There was nothing wrong with the old router at all. Just resetting it would have got you to the same state as you were in when you brought the new one home. Wish I had seen your original post earlier.
