Hi, just joined so firstly hello

I had my virgin 4mb service upgraded to 20mb yesterday and i have had a network set-up for a few years now with no problems.

I set-up the new connection with the modem connected straight to the computer and i am getting a good 20mb connection well about 17-19mb which i'm happy with, but as soon as i go modem>router>computer it drops to about 8mb.

I have a netgear WGT624 108mbps wireless router and i have tried both wireless and wired and both get a speed of about 8mb. I have looked through all the settings and there is nothing obvious and have made sure everything is up to date.

does anybosy have any suggestions on how to speed it up?

Thanks in advance
Chris,

What are you using to test the speed?

an online speedtest called speedtest.net, i know there not great but i have remained using it all the way through so its a kind of constant.

Theres still seems to be a drop of of 10mb when i connect the router

Thanks

To add there are no settings on any router to limit speed.

Also wireless speed is limited by many things like signal quality and range.

As you are on cable the router only deals with the network side of things so as it is a 10/100 router it should be good for way more than 20MB.

You could try resetting the router, there is a pin button on the back, hold it in until all the lights start flashing.

This will wipe any settings out including wireless settings.

Yup, but it's the only way you are going to be sure it is working as it should be.

Also, are you using any filesharing software?

no filesharing is running atm, and i'm wireless and my dad is wired and he uses no file sharing programs and we are both getting about 8, this is doing speedtest at different times and not usually when both computers are on

Apart from resetting and/or trying another router I'm not sure what to suggest.

It is a rather weird scenario, however as it is all OK without the router things do point at that possibly not being up to the job.

How old is it?
