We have a new computer on the way, which will go into another room. In between this computer and the new one will be the kitchen and several walls. The modem will be moved to the other room, and the router will be wired to the new PC - and this one, primarily used for checking e-mails and a few videos here and there - will be given a wireless USB adapter. The option to wire this PC to the router is also possible, though a bit more inconvenient.

The newer PC will be used mostly for gaming and other media-intensive activities. We've been trying to decide on what type of router to go with for the past two weeks now. Every router I've found on Newegg, Amazon, and even in various stores have gotten a lot of scary reviews for them. The best one so far was the WRT54GL by Linksys - but it's a G, and I don't want to void the warranty and not be able to return it by messing up with installing custom Firmware in it.

A laptop and PS3 may also be brought into the home at some point in the future, with the former being left wireless and the latter having either option.

With this in mind, would anyone mind giving me a few suggestions, ideas, etc on what router to go with? I've been told N is currently the best out there, but a lot of reviews pin them as unreliable. Still, N, G, G+, whatever - I just want something that will work through walls reliably and not slow down the connection when gaming or streaming HD movies.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Netgear routers are usually the best of routers with stock firmware. Linksys' stuff really only shines with custom stuff. The WRT54G/WRT54GL should be fine though either way if you can get it cheap, and the option's always out there if you want to flash it later.
