Default Setting up a static IP

Okay i have a few problems with setting up a static IP , i need to do this so i can port-forward on my router , I need to port-forward as i have to open a few ports for xbox live and call of duty 4 as i am having connection difficulites. I have checked my NAT on a program on my xbox which can test your connecition settings and it states that it is OPEN.

I set up a static IP about 3 days ago using a guide on portforward.com , now this worked and i opened the ports i needed. But I realised that i had to configure all the other computers on my network to work with a static IP too. When i woke up the next day after setting up a static IP i realised that all the computers on the network couldnt connect to the internet .. all the other computers on the network were connected up to obtain IP settings and DNS settings automatically so therefore they became disconnected from the internet . Now when i set up a static IP i didnt realise that this would change all the other computers connection settings therefore disconnecting them.......

This would be fine if i had acess to the computers on the network but one of the computers on the network i dont have access to , my brothers , he REFUSES to let me touch his computer and when the internet wasnt working he went mad with me so i had to reset the router and change the settings back to dynamic. I set up the static IP on a computer that was not directly plugged into the router (my laptop with wireless) , now if i set up a static ip on the computer connected(hooked up) to the router and modem will this not change the settings on the other computers?... or when you set up a static IP does it change the settings on the other computers reguardless?

Now i REALLY need to set up a static IP so i can port forward because basicly at the moment due to my connection isues it is imosible for me to play Xbox live , is there any way i can port forward without using a static IP?... or is there any way i can set up a static IP without messing up the computers on my network I.E not having to configure them?? or does this look like i will have to sneak on my brothers computer Ninja-stylee and configure his settings?

Thanks for reading the post , please do not be disheartened if i do not answer your question immediatley.. I am working till 4.PM GMT tomorow (Jan 9th) So please bear with me.

No, it won't change the settings on any other computer if you set up a static ip on the laptop. But, you're going about it all wrong. You DO NOT need to set up a static ip to be able to port-forward. The two really have nothing to do with each other unless your ip address changes frequently. If you set up port-forwarding properly on your router, you'll be able to play XBox Live with no problems. I know personally, because I do it and I don't have a static ip address. Well, my LAN ip is static, but my WAN isn't.

When you're setting up port forwarding, you need to configure it so that those ports are open to the LAN/Private ip address (192.168.x.x) of the computer you're using. In this case, it would be the XBox. I can't remember them off the top of my head, but whatever ip address your XBox has, you need to configure the port forwarding for that specific ip address, and then the ports for it. That will allow you to go in and out with traffic through your XBox.
