Should I use CAT 5 instead of DSL cable?

Hello, at the moment my home network consists of a filter which is plugged into the telephone socket downstairs. From this I run a DSL extension cable up into my room which plugs into the back of my router. From the router, I use a CAT5 cable to my PC for an Ethernet connection.

I am getting d/c 1 - 2 times a day. I have tried wireless but found it to be very laggy during online gameplay.

I have been told from a 02 technical support guy who kind of and I mean "kind of", knew what he was talking about. He suggested using an extended CAT5 cable from my telephone socket to my router upstairs after he originally suggested fibre-optic and stated it to be inexpensive!

My question is whether this option is the right thing to do so I consult in the networking gurus of this forum to advise me if they will. I do have some basic networking knowledge but I would like an opinion of someone with more knowledge than myself.

When i say i have a DSL extension cable? is this the right terminology to use? i feel somewhat in the wrong.

Thanks for your time to read my post.
Hope somebody can help.
Sam.

You have to use a telephone cable to plug into a telephone socket.

Cat5 is for RJ45 networking, not phones.

Your mate has no idea what he is on about.

If you are getting frequent disconnects then first thing is to make sure you have filters in all the right places.

IE: On every phone socket in the house.

Long extension leads from the telephone socket to the Router are generally bad news. You would be better off siting your Router downstairs, with a short cable from the phone socket and running a CAT5 Ethernet Cable from the Router to the upstairs PC.

Thank you Phil, I think this is what the guy was meant to get across to me although he did not make it exactly clear as he was getting confused himself. I will look into buying an extended CAT5 Ethernet cable.

Thanks for your help mate.

The quality of the cable will make a lot of difference.
Cheap telephone extension leads are bad news, but even with high quality ADSL extension cables, long cable runs are not as efficient as CAT5 Ethernet Cables.

@ mrdaveyuk

Have you tried resiting your kit to close the master phone socket, without the 30m lead ? .... you may find you get faster speeds
