I have been toying with the idea of getting VoIP, but know that Vonage is having legal problems, so I don't want to go there. What can anyone tell me about Skype? Is it a viable alternative? Pros? Cons?

I have only dabbled with windows skype with no additional hardware.

I had no problems with it but its a simple setup.

Not true VoIP.

What happened to vonage?

I'm not sure of all the details, but was told by a friend that they were given a court order to not take on any new customers. I figured, if there's a court order involved, it must be serious. ;)

i do use skype for my overseas calls and it works so well for me that i never ventured out for some other program. when i go in china and if i make calls to US, i would probably go bankrupt. skype comes to my resue at that time.

I'm doing some work for a company there in the UK, so I'm hoping that it'll come to my rescue, too. Of course, if I could just get this time difference worked out in my mind, I'd be a lot better off. LOL

I think one thing that has me concerned about the VoIP craze is what happens if your electricity goes out. You're without a phone at all, and there may be a case where you'd NEED one. With a land line, at least, as long as you don't have an electrical phone, you still have service and can contact someone in case of an emergency. How does VoIP handle this?

I use Skype to talk to friends with no problems so far. One of my friends uses Skype to call mobiles and land lines and saves substantially on his calls. Mamab do you know anyone that uses VOIP only?. As yet I would think most users have more than one phone. I have both land line and mobile.

It obviously can't Mamab and the only way round it would be to have a UPS (Uninteruptable Power Supply) which might be good for a couple of hours.
