Slow network speed

i have a very slow networking problem, accessing the internet is fine, but when transferring files to another computer on the network, it is very very slow, it takes about 30 secs to transfer one song, when transferring about 2Gb of music it says it will take 90 mins, can anyone help me increase this speed

We would need to know a bit more about the specs of the PCs involved, to advise you on this, specifically the specs of your NIC Network Cards in each PC and the Make/Model of the Router and whether your Network is wired or wireless.

ok i am trying to send music from my laptop on wireless which uses a USRobtics wireless adapter (model number:5423) which is connected to a cable and wireless router (model number:ADSLR10CW3XI) the computer im trying to send to is connected by an ethernet cable, which is done by using the built in network port, which is a 100mbps connection.

OK ... the US Robotics Adaptor is 802.11g and the Wireless Router supports 802.11b and g, so up to now things look good.

We need to know what NIC Card is in the Desktop though, as if this is 802.11b, this could be the weak link.

If you dont know the card make/model, download <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!> or <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!> and see if it lists the card .... we should then be able to check it quite easily.

OK ... it could be an old NIC Card, with only 802.11b, if so a new PCI Card will only cost you about £5, but before doing that, have a look in your Router's configuration settings, under Wireless and make sure it's not set to B only .... there should be a setting for "B & G" or "Both".

i think you have got something wrong on the way here, on my laptop i use the USRobotics wireless, but in the desktop it has the built in network port, i dont use a seperate network card, i only have the wireless adaptor for the laptop and it is all set up on 802.11g

No .... I think I have understood you clearly ..... what we are looking for here is where the bottleneck is. We have established that your US Rootics Adaptor and your Wireless Router are both 802.11g capable. We cannot determine if your Desktop on board NIC is b or g.

What I was suggesting was ... for £5 you could purchase a PCI NIC Card, to use instead of the on board card, which may solve the issue.
However, before considering that, it would be a good idea to check your Router settings, as mentioned above, to ensure that the Wireless settings are set to B & G" or "Both".

If the Desktop is running on 802.11b or the Router settings are wrong, this will slow down your file transfers.

Hope that clarifies things.

Sorry m8y ..... I have been dealing with another problem, very similar to yours and I have mixed your details and theirs. ........ I must re-read all of the thread more often

You are of course correct, with the wired NIC Card, in your Desktop B & G are not relevant.

Were you able to verify the Router settings are not set to B Only ?

yes it is set to 802.11g, and it is confirmed by the software that USRobotics gave me with the wireless adapter telling me that i have a 54mbps connection.

Maybe the problem is not the Network, but somewhere else ..........another thought ... if it's showng 90 mins to get 2Gb from the Laptop to the HDD on the desktop, is that figure showing in Vista on the Laptop ? ........ if so have you installed SP1 on the Laptop ?

Another thing to check is tht the HDD on the Desktop, has not reverted to PIO Mode in the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller.
You can check this by going to Device Manger/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, expand the item and right click on the Primary Channel, select Properties/Advanced and make sure the current mode is not PIO

no on the desktop the hdd is not PIO it is DMA or something like that, it is an xp laptop, that shows 90 mins, but that speed is roughly the same as using usb 1.1! the hard drive in the laptop only spins at 4,200 rpm could that be it

No. I don't think it is the hard drive... they can be written to much faster than that.

Would you mind posting some HJT logs from both PC's in to this thread so as I can have a look at it? Whilst it may not be malware that is causing the slow transfers, I might be able to see something else that is causing the bottlenecks.

Download and rename <Link hidden. Register for free to see this link!> (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open Hijackthis.
  • If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator
  • Click on Do a system scan and save a log file
  • Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
    • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Note: Although we have renamed Hijackthis to sniper, we will still refer to it as Hijackthis or HJT.
