Default Slow network speed

Nope ... doesn't sound like the HDD.

One other thing you could try, to identify where the problem is, woul be to get a friend or neighbour, with a Laptop, to hook up, using the Ethernaet cable and see if the same speed applies to this.

This may help to narrow it down a bit.

SUCCESS-ish lol

that is odd when using the ethernet cable it took around about 2 mins to copy 910mb film onto the desktop, tryed again the same file onto the desktop went upto 26 mins, which really is about the same as before, by the way i just checked how much all the documents was and it was roughly 4 gb not 2, oops lol. i must of got confused with the music files oops again but still it was pretty slow.

so i guess we now know it was something with the wireless, could it of been the encryption. i.e. wpa2. (i think) would that of caused such a slowness in transferring?

also when transferring the music files, the time seemed to drop to around 20 mins, at the begginning as it did them first, but when it got to the document files the time shot up to 70, then it found more music to transfer and went back down to about the 20 mins mark, why is this?

Default Slow network speed

Hmmm. I don't see anything particular there.

On the laptop, do you have a torrent downloader installed? I ask because there is a process running called RedSwoosh and I saw a few pointers on Google that it could cause problems.

I think you have Commodo Firewall installed on both machines. Can you try disabling it and then seeing what the network speeds are like.

Otherwise, I don't think there is anything wrong. It is running as fast as it is going to unfortunately. Unless of course it used to run faster.

Default Slow network speed

OK ... silly question but ........ did you actually time how long the transfer took ? or did you just assume the time quoted was accurate ?

Default Slow network speed

ok yes i do have a torrent downloader, but i dont have it active recently as it causes my broadband to slow down to a snail.

the ethernet transfer of the 910mb file was roughly 2 mins
but by wireless it took more like 15 then 26

To be honest, whilst it is slow, those speeds are probably not that far off.

Especially for earlier G technologies.

How are you testing this? Are the laptop and router right next to each other? Or are there any walls in the way?

One thing you might want to check is on your wireless router you might be able to find a setting determining what wireless speed it uses. (A, B, G etc.)

It may be set to automatic or something but change it to G. Then try again.

Sometimes if you have an older device on your network it will default to the older devices maximum.

Just timed my G network and it took 6 minutes to transfer a 46Mb file.

Changed from AES to TKIP and it went down to 20 seconds!

So there is the solution! Change to WPA2 Personal using TKIP.

Yes... but no.

You should be using WPA as it is much more secure (WEP is basically no security at all..)

WPA2 is just newer and more secure than WPA.

But, technically AES should be faster than TKIP because TKIP requires more processing from the computer and the poor router with next to no memory.

So, WPA with AES should give you the most chance of fast transfer speeds.

But, as Mike noticed, it isn't always the case..

Why big networks use RADIUS and $$$ routers

ok yes i am using a WPA, i was not using WPA2 because my brother's psp does not always support it, the TKIP was the only selection i could choose with WPA, so i should change it WPA2, which will only give me the option of AES, so i should select WPA2.

I checked the same file transferring under WPA AES and it took 35sec to transfer.

Switched back to WPA2 AES and got 35 seconds. So what is going on here? Yesterday I had extremely slow transfers with the same algorithm!

Mind you, yesterday my daughter was also online and I am not sure what she is using.

Just tried again and it is dead slow again!
