You are of course correct, with the wired NIC Card, in your Desktop B & G are not relevant.

Were you able to verify the Router settings are not set to B Only ?

Maybe the problem is not the Network, but somewhere else ..........another thought ... if it's showng 90 mins to get 2Gb from the Laptop to the HDD on the desktop, is that figure showing in Vista on the Laptop ? ........ if so have you installed SP1 on the Laptop ?

Another thing to check is tht the HDD on the Desktop, has not reverted to PIO Mode in the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller.
You can check this by going to Device Manger/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, expand the item and right click on the Primary Channel, select Properties/Advanced and make sure the current mode is not PIO

no on the desktop the hdd is not PIO it is DMA or something like that, it is an xp laptop, that shows 90 mins, but that speed is roughly the same as using usb 1.1! the hard drive in the laptop only spins at 4,200 rpm could that be it

No. I don't think it is the hard drive... they can be written to much faster than that.

Would you mind posting some HJT logs from both PC's in to this thread so as I can have a look at it? Whilst it may not be malware that is causing the slow transfers, I might be able to see something else that is causing the bottlenecks.

Download and rename HijackThis (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open Hijackthis.
  • If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator
  • Click on Do a system scan and save a log file
  • Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
    • Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Note: Although we have renamed Hijackthis to sniper, we will still refer to it as Hijackthis or HJT.

Nope ... doesn't sound like the HDD.

One other thing you could try, to identify where the problem is, woul be to get a friend or neighbour, with a Laptop, to hook up, using the Ethernaet cable and see if the same speed applies to this.

This may help to narrow it down a bit.

SUCCESS-ish lol

that is odd when using the ethernet cable it took around about 2 mins to copy 910mb film onto the desktop, tryed again the same file onto the desktop went upto 26 mins, which really is about the same as before, by the way i just checked how much all the documents was and it was roughly 4 gb not 2, oops lol. i must of got confused with the music files oops again but still it was pretty slow.

so i guess we now know it was something with the wireless, could it of been the encryption. i.e. wpa2. (i think) would that of caused such a slowness in transferring?

also when transferring the music files, the time seemed to drop to around 20 mins, at the begginning as it did them first, but when it got to the document files the time shot up to 70, then it found more music to transfer and went back down to about the 20 mins mark, why is this?
