Default Sorry its me again - Printing problems over network + Accessing one computer

Ok let me say how it is, i have a main computer (xp home service pack 2) set up down stairs it has a printer next to it plugged in by usb, i also have a wireless laptop (xp pro service pack 2)

i wanted to try and print using the share facilty on the xp computer, to be able to share this one usb printer without buying a print server.

the printer is installed on both computers, installed using the HP software, i can bring my laptop down and print of by usb, but what i wanted to achive was being able to print through the main computer that should always be connected to the printer, i cant do this from my laptop. but if i plug my laptop into the printer, then try finding the printer on the main computer, i can, it can see that it is plugged into my laptop and that i can use this to print, problem is its the wrong way round. i want to print from my laptop to the main computer then to the printer, i can print from the main computer through the laptop, tryed just to check that it would work if the other way round.

can anyone help me to print from my laptop to the main computer then to the printer.

plus do i have to view files to be able to print? the main computer can view my laptop files but again not the other way round.

You could be having a firewall issue here, it sound like the firewall is enabled to allow access from your desktop pc to your laptop but your desktops firewall is blocking your laptop, if you go into your firewall settings on your desktop pc and enter the ip address from your laptop into it that may solve your problem with print and file sharing

Try running the Network wizard again on both machines and make sure File/Printer Sharing is selected.

Norton can be a swine to get it to work with File / Printer Sharing. I have experiences when I just could not get it to work at all.

I'm afraid to say you would have probably been better not to upgrade to Norton...

Hi rbscooby,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team. Are you using Norton Internet Security or Norton 360? Both of these products contain the Norton Personal Firewall, and when installed should disable the Windows Firewall, so there are no conflicts. In order to get File Sharing working properly, you do need to adjust some of the settings in the Norton Firewall.

If you could please clarify for my which product you are using I can assist you further with the File Sharing problem you are experiencing.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi rbsccoby,

Thanks for clarifying which Norton product you have installed.

The first step you need to take is to make sure that LiveUpdate has been running and that you have the latest program and definition files installed. Click Start-All Programs->Norton Internet Security, and choose LiveUpdate from the sub-menu. LiveUpdate will begin running and will download and install any available updates.

Next, please make sure the Windows Firewall is disabled, so that it does not conflict with the Norton Personal Firewall. You should also make sure that there are no other internet security or antivirus applications installed by checking in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. The rule of thumb is to never have more than one antivirus and internet security application that is scanning in real-time installed.

Verify that both File and Printer sharing is enabled on the machine that has the printer connected, as well as the other machine. Make sure that you click on the "Permissions" tab in both the File and Printer sharing and give full access.

1. Launch Norton Internet Security 2008.

2. Click on the "Norton Internet Security" tab at the top of the window. Click on the arrow next to "Settings," click on "Web Browsing," click on "Personal Firewall" and then choose the "Configure" button.

3. On the left side of the window, click on "Trust Control" and then click on the "Trusted" tab at the top of the window.

4. Click on the "Add" button and add the IP address of the other computer. Click the "OK" button and then click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the page.

After completing the steps above, open Network Neighborhood and locate your Share and see if you can access it.

Next, open your Printers and Faxes Control panel and try printing a test page to the shared printer.

If you are still unable to see your shared drive or print to your shared printer, try disabling Norton Internet Security and then try to access the shared folders and printers again. If you are able to access them after disabling Norton Internet Security, then that indicates a problem with your installation.

Please let me know outcome.

Thanks,
Mike
