Ok let me say how it is, i have a main computer (xp home service pack 2) set up down stairs it has a printer next to it plugged in by usb, i also have a wireless laptop (xp pro service pack 2)
i wanted to try and print using the share facilty on the xp computer, to be able to share this one usb printer without buying a print server. the printer is installed on both computers, installed using the HP software, i can bring my laptop down and print of by usb, but what i wanted to achive was being able to print through the main computer that should always be connected to the printer, i cant do this from my laptop. but if i plug my laptop into the printer, then try finding the printer on the main computer, i can, it can see that it is plugged into my laptop and that i can use this to print, problem is its the wrong way round. i want to print from my laptop to the main computer then to the printer, i can print from the main computer through the laptop, tryed just to check that it would work if the other way round. can anyone help me to print from my laptop to the main computer then to the printer. plus do i have to view files to be able to print? the main computer can view my laptop files but again not the other way round. |

You could be having a firewall issue here, it sound like the firewall is enabled to allow access from your desktop pc to your laptop but your desktops firewall is blocking your laptop, if you go into your firewall settings on your desktop pc and enter the ip address from your laptop into it that may solve your problem with print and file sharing

Try running the Network wizard again on both machines and make sure File/Printer Sharing is selected.

Norton can be a swine to get it to work with File / Printer Sharing. I have experiences when I just could not get it to work at all.
I'm afraid to say you would have probably been better not to upgrade to Norton...

i know norton can be a big problem, but really its not my computer, im 15 you see, and i take my laptop daily to school and just wanted a place to store my work on, instead of putting it on an external hard drive, or data stick, and i wanted to be able to know what to do for the future, currently about to build a new computer from exsisting parts, and i dont fanci bringing down my laptop to just print of some work when i have this possibility

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team. Are you using Norton Internet Security or Norton 360? Both of these products contain the Norton Personal Firewall, and when installed should disable the Windows Firewall, so there are no conflicts. In order to get File Sharing working properly, you do need to adjust some of the settings in the Norton Firewall. If you could please clarify for my which product you are using I can assist you further with the File Sharing problem you are experiencing. I look forward to your response.
