Default Use of FM and AM with modems

Where does the use of FM and AM fit in the use of Modems?

Uh, nothing? Wi-Fi is pretty far from the bands used by AM and FM radio (gHz rather than mHz and kHz)

As Carbon said ..... FM and AM are Radio frequencies and have nothing to do with Modems.

I beg to differ FM stands for 'Frequency modulated' and AM stands for 'amplitude modulated'. In the sense of radio the sound wave recorded is too weak to be broadcast by itself so it's superimposed onto a carrier wave either through frequency superposition or by amplitude superposition. The same applies to alot of kinds of Signals broadcast.

What was the intention of the original question anyways?

Yep ..... I think we need the original poster to put his question in a more specific context.

The word MODEM stands for Modulator/DeModulator, which loosely means modualating & demodulating signals, but modern Modems do a whole lot more than that, including compression and verifying data.

These days AM (535 to 1705kHz) and FM (88 to 108 MHz) have become household terms for Radio bands, AM being the older of the two and in this context, they have little, if anything to do with Modems, however, before making things too technical or turning this thread into a science lesson, let's see what DavidHJ has to say
