Default Using a router/modem as just a router???

Hi, ive got a Belkin 54g wireless router. I live in halls of residence at university and my internet comes through a RJ45 port on the wall straight into my computer (as if its coming from a router). I want to share this internet with other computers using my router.

Is this possible and how?

The router requires a input from a RJ11 although the internet comes from a RJ45.

Any help would be much appriciated.
Thanks

Hi jamier

Welcome to TCF

It looks to me like the Uni already has some kind of Intranet setup already.
Just get a length of cable with an RJ45 plug on each end and plug one end into the wall and the other into your network card.

I may be wrong.

You need a wireless cable router.

Cable routers dont have a modem built in so the RJ45 that comes from your wall plugs into the router via RJ45 also.

Then you can program the wireless on said router just like any other setup.

Default Using a router/modem as just a router???

Hi, ive got a wirless router/asdl modem, it has four LAN ports (RJ45) and a ADSL port (RJ11). My problem is that i want to use it as a wireless router only, on a normal wireless router (without the modem) it has four LAN ports (RJ45) and a internet port (also RJ45), which would be fine as i could take the output from the original modem and put it into the router. Although i cant do this on mine as it is also a modem and requires a RJ11 input. Can i do this with my router/modem or will i have to buy a wireless router on its own?

I have to keep the original modem in place for reasons which are not important and that is why i cannot jus replace the modem with the router/modem.

Any help would be much appriciated,
Thanks,
James

Simple answer to this one mate.

You need a standalone router.

I think we also discussed this on another of your threads.

No need to start another mate, the answer is still the same. :)
