He all,

I've just started having trouble with Vista and my wireless connection. At times it will not see the connection, and at others it will, but will fail to connect.
Network diagnostics say that "association failed due to an unknown reason"
SSID broadcast is on. I'm using WPA2, but got nowhere with security off.
The adapter is a Netgear WN111 with a DG834N router/modem, also from Netgear.

I occasionally get that. Could be someone broadcasting occasionally on the same channel.

Try changing channel (1--13) on the router.

Otherwise, there are all sorts of firewalls that will stop you connecting, which you could try disabling to see if they are the cause.

Might be a firewall issue, but you should only have one running at any one time on a PC.

Changing the chanel can help, as can repositioning the router. Does it work if you are right next to the router?

Also, you can try using a static IP address.

There are no other networks in the area, and the router is set to auto channel [it works best with the other PCs], but I have tried others. No joy.

No luck with disabling firewalls either. I'm using just Norton BTW.

As for a static IP address - It reports that TCP/IPv4 is not installed and fails to install it.

It connects a odd moments, but only for a couple of mins. Sending any sort of data drops it out

Many thanks for the help.

Michael.

P.S. Sorry for the delayed reply - I've been in Scotland for a few days, so had no 'net connection.

Well I've got a sense of deja vu.

I had soem more serious issues [not just network related], so the shop told me to reformat, which I did.

Now Vista will report it is connected with Local Connectivity, but the router does not show it as connected.
The connection details in Vista are what should appear if it was connected to the router.
I really don't know what to do or where to go with this.

No.

I'm unable to even access the router when it's supposedly "connected"

Just noticed you are using WPA2. What other settings for WPA, and also personal or enterprise?

It's WPA2 Personal. That is the only security option the router has (Strange I know)

Check to see if there is a firmware update for your Router.
Vista doesn't always play nicely with Routers

Also have a quick look here to see if anything jumps out
