I currently use a Zoom ADSL X6 router modem/ethernet cable. When watching live feeds i.e. Euro 2008, the picture freezes intermittently. Downloads, not that I do many, tend to take a while. My machine has 1gb RAM and 180GB disc so it's not exactly a snail.

Could it be the cable from the BT microfilter leading to the modem that could be the problem? I have noticed at the connections it has 4 internal wires. Do I need a more higher spec cable? I recall it cost around £7 but I have seen some in PC World for £20+. OR it is because I share a socket with the phone?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Filters are all the same and either work or they don't, never seen a faulty one in my day to day.

Speed will be down to how far you are from and exchange and what speed you are on from your supplier.

Also PC speed is governed by many things but mostly RAM and CPU, regardless if you have a bunch of spyware on the machine it can be the most powerful in the world and it will still be slow.

Do a broadband speed test here > http://www.speedtest.net/ < what speeds are you getting?

Cheers Dave.

Just ran test:
Download 709kb/s
Upload 294 kb/s
Ping: 364ms
Distance:50m

the fact I pay £14.99 per month to my provider for 'up to 8mb' is ridiculous. I have sent them an email to tech support.

UPTO being the word, it's in all the small print unfortunately.

You are on 3/4 of a meg, so yeah, slow.

As your ping is so high that tells me you must be quite far from your exchange, not a lot you can do, except move.

This is odd because when I used a BT Voyager 105modem my speeds were between 1.5 - 2mbp. Then all of sudden that modem could not dial in to my IP. They ran numerous checks and I was advised to get a modem router. Since then I have no real trouble dialling in but the speed has dropped. Just ran another test 3 mins ago and it is now running at 1029kbps(1mb).
