| Hi, I was given a 2nd hand Netgear WPN824 wireless router (I have never used wireless before). I have only just realised that this router does not have an integral modem which explains why I've been wasting hours unsuccessfully trying to wireless connect to the internet. I currently have a Speedtouch 330 modem supplied by my ISP. Can I use the Speedtouch modem with the wireless router? If I can, how do I connect it as the output from the modem is a USB connection (currenlty going into my laptop) and the input to the router is an ethernet connection (RJ45 I think). Or do I need anew modem?? Thanks in advance, croftjob |

| You need a new wireless router im afraid, I had the same issue. There are 2 types of wireless Routers; -Cable routers - These are designed for people who have Cable internet (hence the name). The modem for a cable internet system has a ethernet connection, which can be linked to either a PC or a router. This is the type of router you have. -ADSL router - These are designed for people who have internet through their telephone lines. You scrap your old modem that plugs into USB, and stuff the cable from the line directly into the router. This is the kinda router you need I'll see if I can find a site that explains it a bit more clearly than I have done.... |

| So as not to confuse anybody reading this elsewhere: I have a feeling this is a UK thing. ADSL modems and cable modems both typically output ethernet and a router can work on any ethernet connection as long as the ISP doesn't mess with DHCP. Your second example is simply a combination ADSL modem/router. Don't your ISPs offer ADSL modems with ethernet outs?

| ADSL ones are USB for some reason. Not always the case probably, but from what I've seen, they generally are USB |

| Just to clear this up again. You can use the sort of router you have, there are still ethernet ADSL modems around. I use two of them... I have a spare D-Link DSL 300T in a box under my desk. Cheap as chips on eBay. However, most ISPs will provide a combination modem router... Just simpler to be honest.
