Thanks for that.

There is something very weird going on, and I am 99% sure you are correct in saying that it is DNS issues, hence why as long as you do not change site, everything is fine.

The ipconfig shows that you have a Tunnel adapter Automatic Tunneling Pseudo-Interface and the Teredo one as well.

Do you know where these came from? They are basically an extension that allows your computer to use IPv6 networking when the rest of the network is IPv4.

There are two possibilities how these got installed: they somehow got installed in an update or when you're computer went to a tech or something for repair (or you may have installed them deliberately?) or they were installed by malware, ie. a virus.

I think the best way to sort the problem, is to try to solve it assuming it isn't malware, and then you can go to the malware forums once we have tried (successfully or not) to fix it, and post a log for an expert to have a look at and see if there is any malware on the system.

To remove the tunnelling adaptor you need to:

Right click My Network Places - Properties - Local Area Connection - Properties

Somewhere in the list in the centre of the box should be Microsoft TCP/IP Version 6. You need to remove this.

A typical list would look like:

Client for MS Networks
File and Print Sharing for MS Networks
QOS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you are not sure whether to delete something or not, please ask here first.

Once you have removed that, restart your computer, and see if the internet is working. Hopefully it will be.

Whatever the case, can you provide another ipconfig the same way as before so I can check that IPv6 uninstalled successfully.

Do you have by any chance a Belkin router? Have you tried connecting with a wireless connection to see if the problem still exists then?

Hope this gets you back online.

hi, i installed ipv6 via utorrent :) it has never been a problem before, i always had it installed before on my previous installations and it never affected the internet, and before i installed the internet wasn't working properly, i shall uninstall and see if this has any effect, thanks for the reply.

EDIT:
no i dont have a belkin router i have a d-link router connected to a 4-way linksys switch router thingy hahah!
but i do have a wireless belkin card, and if you want me to go into the router firmware page thing, i can only do that on the d-link as my father has forgotten the code for the linksys one, or so he says!

Just registered on that forum to have a look at the thread. It may be similar but no definitive conclusion was come to..

I am pretty sue that it is an issue with IPv6 but if I am honest this is something I currently know very little about - I have no idea why it would help with a torrent.

If other computers are fine on the same router then it is not at fault, and it is at least giving out the right DNS server to begin with.

You can try doing this little fix:

Create a file in notepad named NODETYPE.REG with the following contents:

You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.

1)Filename : NODETYPE.REG

2)Save as type: all files

3)Encoding: ANSI

If you do not change it from txt type to all files type, then the file will actually be NODETYPE.REG.txt, which won't accomplish the desired result.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]

"NodeType"=dword:00000001
Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

I know nothing about the version of XP you talk about, and going by the rules of this forum, it is not allowed to be discussed here.

But, ignoring that, can you post a HijackThis log. I am beginning to think this is malware related.

Please start a new thread in the Virus, Spyware & Security Forum with the logs and a link back to this thread to assist the helper.

Download and rename TrendMicro HijackThis™.exe (HJT)

Alternate download link 1
Alternate download link 2
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
  • Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
    • Close HijackThis and rename it.
    • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe
    • Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename
    • Type in sniper.exe and press Enter
    • Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
  • From the desktop open HijackThis.
  • Important! If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator
  • Click on Do a system scan and save a log file
  • HijackThis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
    • Do not have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Note: Although we have renamed HijackThis to sniper, we will still refer to it as HijackThis or HJT.

How far is the router from the PC?

Have you tried different wi-fi channels, interference could be getting in the way.

1 or 11 tend to be strongest, things like cordless phones all run on channels so can get in the way.
