I have a Linksys Wireless - G 2.4GHz Broadband Router. I have a Linksys USB Adapter attached to an old Compaq laptop running Windows 2000 Pro. (works fine) A friend gave me an Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN CardBus Adapter. (5GHz) IEEE802.11a I can connect to the router/internet using the USB adapter, but it's more for a desktop PC. I installed the wi-fi card, but I can't get it to work. Is it because of the frequency difference? I also have an old IBM Thinkpad running Windows 98SE. I've never had any luck with 98 and wi-fi. I'm guessing it's not compatible?

I think I know why I can't connect to my router with the wifi card. My router is for 802.11b/g, not 802.11a.

Thats probably why then, 802.11a operates at a much higher frequency (5Ghz) than b/g. (2.4Ghz)
